I’d just finished Moby Dick before reading Conquering Cascade and found striking parallels between the vicissitudes of the hunt for the white whale, and that of the black gold. The fraught and chequered journeys and second-guessing of outcomes made for compelling reading in both works. All the more poignant for me because I’ve spent so much time in that part of the country and will return soon with refreshed perspective. Checking out the headwaters of Cascade Creek will be high-up in the bucket list.”
